Where can I find out? I have been through the XP Support
areas and am getting dizzy!! Thanks GailDaly
Yes, you can. If the Home machine is functioning properly, all shoudl be
well. If it is *not* functioning properly, run the Upgrade Advisor (on
either XP CD) to try to identify the problems.
Fix the problems *before you upgrade the problems* along with the OS.
This of course begs the question of why you want to upgrade? There are
valid reasons (need encryption and domain logins for example) , but there
area also mistaken reasons - like thinking that the upgrade will fix
something it doesn't.
If all is well, simply insert the PRO CD and choose Upgrade install. Get
lunch but don't go too far.. there will be questions.
I must make my usual comment regarding the encrypted file system. It's
very easy to install and use. In addition to this ease-of-use, it's *very
easy and very possible* to neglect to export and veryify the authentication
keys and safe redundant copies at different sites.
As we know, Once in a while you have to do some work on Windows that can
lead you to reconstructing your user account. Made it look exactly the
same? To you, maybe, but not to the encryption engine which is really
pickly.
If you didn't export the authentification certificates for each account, you
can consider any encrypted data gone, permanently.
After all, it wouldn't be secure if it was easy to recover.
So please, if this is one of your reasons for upgrading, learn as much as
you can about it, particularly the practical aspects of saving, verifying
and restoring the authentication keys.
