I want to have the worksheet tabs vertically on either the left or right hand side of the screen rather than along the bottom. Is there any way to do this ? It would also be good to vary the width of these tabs.

AFAIK a vertical layout is not possible. The width of these tabs is
automatically aligned to the lenght of the tab name
