Can I create a new "type" of reference?

I am using: Windows XP and MS Word 2003 (SP2)

In writing articles that will be later on published. I use in my document
reference to images as e.g. Fig. 1. To add them I use the
Insert/Reference/Caption where I have created a new label Fig. Because they
are based on a paragraph style when I try to make a cross reference I get the
text of the paragraph rather than the Fig. number, which can be very
difficulty to deal with when you have more than one reference in the same
paragraph. Also, the complete paragraph format is changed once I insert the
caption. I have looked into creating a new character style based on the
caption style but it cannot be done. I tried to create a macro with field
codes but have not succeeded. I have read and looked into any WORD book
which I guess has confused me more than solve anything. Any suggestions?

When you insert cross-references to your captions are you using Insert |
Reference | Cross-reference to Fig. and selecting "Only label and number"?
If so, you should not be getting the entire caption.

I may be missing something here, so please indicate where your procedure -
for creating the Cross Reference - deviates from this:

1- Insert>Reference>Cross Reference
2- From the Reference Type: list choose Figure
3- From the Insert Reference to: list choose Only Label & Number

If you are manually inserting cross-ref field codes you'll need to add a
'switch', which I believe is \h (but don't quote me on that:}).

If I've missed the point just say so.

Yes, I am using the Insert Insert |Reference | Cross-reference but even if I
select only label and number what I get is the first sentence of the
paragraph where the caption is. If there are more than one Figures in that
paragraph the line is repeated.

Have never experienced this before & can't reproduce it here. I've tried
typing the caption immediately after the Label number (no punctuation or
space), using a custom label, messing with settings, even forcing the
caption onto the same line/para as the heading. I still get the label &
number only regardless of what I do.

Perhaps Suzanne will come up with some insights, so don't give up yet!

No, I ran out of ideas quite some time ago. I almost never use the Caption
feature, so I'm not that familiar with it, but I can't figure how this could
be happening.

Well, actually, if a caption label were inserted and a cross-reference to it
(or the Table of Figures) created, and the user then went back and added the
caption text, it could very well get inside the bookmark created by the
cross-reference (or TOF). That's the most common explanation for this sort
of phenomenon.
