Can i convert multiple bmp's to jpg without having to resave them

Hi i am working on a document that has a lot of bitmap image objects in it
and is making my file huge is there any way that i can convert them to jpg's
without having to delete each individual one then replace it with the desired
smaller pics. If it is possible can i convert them all in one go. Perhaps
possibly hopefully

What kind of bitmap pictures have you got, and exactly how did you
insert them into Word?

JPEG is OK to compress photorealistic pictures. For vector graphics and
screenshots, it's less than useful.

Usually, the best approach is to insert the pictures as links only. That
way, your Word document stays nice and small. Downside: you always have
to retain the picture images along with the document.

They are screen shots that have been copied and pasted onto a document. (not
photo's or anything too fancy)

I have to keep the pictures in view at all times as they are used regularaly
to aid in learning for absolute beginners so if they have to click on links
to open pictures they will just get very scared and probably run.

OK, then JPEG is really not what you want. TIFF, maybe GIF.

They don't need to click on anything, the pictures are visible in the
file as if it was placed there normally -- like pictures on a web site:
visible as long as the connection to the pictures is not changed.

You need to use "Insert | Picture | From File: As Link" to get that result.
