What was the old dos software application? If we have to guess it's only
going to slow the process...

Word can open older versions of its file format, and a number of other
formats. Your mileage will vary with your version of Word e.g.

The information "in squares" is probably non-text information, like
layout, embedded pictures etc.

Experts on the numerous Word newsgroups may have other advice, but they
will also want to know the file-types and software versions.

When you use File - Open go to the bottom line where it says "Files of
type" and click on the down arrow at the end of the dialog box for
that line. Scroll through the list of the various types of files that
Word can convert and see if the name of your DOS application is listed
there.

Good luck

The squares mean it cant read your old files. Use an app that can read
the files in the app that they were originally created in.

It would help if you identified your old DOS application. Depending on what it
is, you may or may not be able to extract the information on those floppies. If
Word can't do it, there may be something else that can. Of course, depending on
how old those floppies are, and how you've stored them, you might not be able to
read them even if you had your old DOS application running on a DOS-based
computer.
