Can existing macros be assigned toolbar buttons?

One of my co-workers is using Word 2003. She had a number of macros that had
buttons on her toolbars. They were there for literally years and were always
present, no matter the document she was working on. She had a computer
problem a few weeks ago and now all the buttons are gone, although the macros
are still there.

Is there a way to reassign the existing macros back to buttons? I don't
mind recreating the buttons, but the only way I've been able to figure out
how to do this is to manually recreate the macros from scratch, which is a
pain. So, can anyone tell me if there's a way to assign an existing macro to
a button on the toolbar?

You don't have to recreate the macros if they still exist. Instead, click
Tools | Customize. On the Commands tab, locate the "Macros" category, and
then just drag the commands to the desired toolbar.
 
As you're doing that, you can assign a button to it from the good-
sized selection provided, or even design your own. (They took away
that possibility in Word2007.) IIRC a "Modify" button turns up when
you highlight a command that's in the command list of the toolbar in
the Customize operation.

They took away that possibility in Word2007.

But, if your are willing to take your head out of the sand and learn a few
new skills then you can assign a tremendously wide range of images to your
custom macro icons in Word2007. This even includes icons that you may wish
to place on the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).

There are probably many things one can do if one has mastered this or
that arcane bit of programming.

That does not, however, apply to the vast majority of Word users,
especially those who come here to learn.

Haven't your betters on the secret "MVP discussion list" warned you to

Oh, I know that you will deny it, but I think the real secret is your
burning desire for an MVP nomination. You scorn that which you covet most.
That does not, however, apply to the vast majority of Word users,
especially those who come here to learn.

If it applies to just one is reason enough for you to stop trying to close
doors: "They took away that possibility in Word2007"
