can connect to internet but not shared printer

I am not very technically proficient, so I hope that this makes sense. I am
on a three-computer home network. Computers A and B are both Windows xp, I
think, but C is Windows 98 or so. I'm not really the one running the network,
but the administrator can't figure out this particular problem below anymore
than I can:

Computer B is my personal computer, and I would like to be able to use
Computer A's shared printer to print a file. I connect through Computer A to
the internet just fine, but cannot read any shared files and cannot access
the shared printer. I've tried redoing network setup several times on both
computers (making sure that file/printer sharing is selected), have enabled
Netbios over ICP (as one help file suggested), have checked the printer
settings... but I can't get them to connect.

When I search for a printer from Computer B, I get only "Microsoft Network".
If I type in a name directly, it doesn't recognize it. I cannot access My
Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network/(workgroup name) from
Computer B. When I try from Computer A, I can open the workgroup but cannot
open Computer B's icon. When I return to the Microsoft Windows Network folder
(still on computer A, I hope this is making sense), I get two icons, one with
(workgroup name), and the other actually named "Workgroup," which I cannot
open. I fear that I've created two groups somehow, and I don't know how to
undo it.

Terribly sorry to bother you, but any help files or advice you could
recommend would be greatly appreciated!!

Okay, I'm posting diagnostics that Chuck suggested to another user in an
earlier thread... hopefully it will help?

Chuck

I've been working on it for the past few nights and still can't connect. It
seems:
-My computer can't ping computer A
-Computer A can't ping my computer
-My computer can't find anything under the command "net view"
-My computer can connect to the internet, but I think that connection is
through a router, not directly through Computer A, as I first thought.
-I've run network setup and it runs fine on both computers.
-Sometimes Computer A lists my computer under the network and sometimes it
doesn't.

Does that make sense??

P.S. I ran the diagnostics on http://winhlp.com/wxnet.htm. Checked winsock,
the firewall, went through the 'workgroup is not accessible' section in great
detail... not sure what to do next!

Thanks for your time!

Start by making sure that NetBT is explicitly Enabled on both computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

And check both computers for personal firewalls or other security programs that
are interfering with SMBs.

And when you say "can't ping", what error are you seeing? Be explicit here.
