Can Clear Type be turned off?

I switched over to Calibri as my default font in Word 2003 as well as 2007,
and thought it looked a bit fuzzy. I d/l the Windows Clear Type Power Toy
and had it adjusted, and everything looks much clearer now, even print on
web pages. My question is--I know that I have turned this on before, long
ago when I first installed XP on this partition. I'm wondering if there was
anything that might have turned it off. I find it hard to believe that this
new clarity is all in my head.

Start > Help and Support > In the search box type clear type (enter).
If you're in Windows XP you will get one task:
Use Clear Type for screen fonts.

Follow the instructions. Your options are (standard) or (clear type)

Just realized that I installed a new theme--Royale. I really do like it...
but perhaps that did it?

Hi Paul,

Prior to reading your post I had not heard of Clear Type.

I got it, and if the changes you saw were in your head, you
are not alone. The difference I see is very significant, and
very helpful to my tired eyes.

(I'm not certain that I am interpreting your "question"
correctly, but to see if you have turned it off, just check
Control Panel | Clear Type.

There is a check box to turn it on and off.

All the best,

I don't have that separate Control Panel, nor that Power Toy
installed, but in the default install (some Service Pack) there
is an option under the Display Control Panel : Appearance-tab :
Effects ...-button : (a Checkbox with a dropdown-list)
[ ] 'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:
_Standard
_Clear Type

Paul, you or something you did/installed/ran may have changed this.
