Can Breaking Links Corrupt Excel File

I had links to spreadsheet charts in a word doc that were causing huge delays
in opening the word doc so I removed the links just by selecting and deleting
them. I later found the Excel workbook to be corrupted and won't open
anymore. Could this have caused the problem and does this suggest a
workaround to open the Excel file.
Thanks.

Could it have caused the problem - yes, but that's not saying that it
absolutely did cause it.

As for a future workaround, look at Tools --> Options --> Edit tab and check
the box labeled "Ask to update automatic links". This will then display a
message that lets you confirm the update before it's done. I believe this is
workbook specific, so you'd have to do this for any workbooks you don't want
to update without checking with you first.

Thanks. Kris
