Can anyone explain the green box next to read-only attribute on fo

Hi folks,

I'm perplexed by Windows XP's consistent marking the "read-only" attribute
box with green color.

When I select any folder in MSExplorer, right click, select Properties, I am
presente with the usual info about the folder. Under Attributes there are
two settings, the first, read only, has its box shaded in green.

If I click on the box it will toggle between three states:
1) green filled
2) blank (presumably this means the folder and/or contents is not "read-only"
3) checked (presumably this means the folder and/or contents are "read-only"

I've posed this question to others and had many speculate as to the cause
and effect of the marking. I've read KB Article 326549 re: Cannot view or
change the read-only or System Attribute of Folder. I've attempted to
"remove" the green filling by going to the command line and running attrib -r
-s on the folder in question.

Each of the contents of the folder are not designated read only.
I've checked special permissions and confirmed that all rights are given to
the directory and its contents.

I've even specifically set special permissions to the Everyone group.

It's not that I believe the files are restricted, i just want to understand
why this box is consistently green (not blank) after all my attempts to
"blank" it?

Does anyone actually know what this state means????

I'm confused

The gray state, or green for you, means...

[[Microsoft calls this a tri-mode flag. When it has gray in the background,
it indicates that some file or folder anywhere under that particular folder
has been set to Read-only.

This checkmark does not actually control the Read-only attribute on the
child files and folder. It just displays their status.]]

If you uncheck the Read-Only attribute, Windows will prompt you to confirm
your changes.

You have chosen to make the following attribute change(s):

unset read-only

Do you want to apply this change to this folder only, or do you want to
apply it to all subfolders and files as well?
-----

Click the option that you want, and then click OK.

Basically this means nothing for folders.

the folder is customized.]]

You can't remove the read-only attribute from a folder?
