Can an MVP Help??

Under Start > Programs I have a folder called Utilities. It is not
appearing in the menu list although if I look for it under Explore its
there. If I rename it Utilitie or tilities or any variation on the name, it
will show up, but if I name it Utilities it disappears!!!!!!!

Attempts to make a new Utilities folder result in a "Duplicate file name"
warning, even though it isn't visible.

If I drag it to All Users, it won't show.

If I drag another user's Utilities folder to mine, it won't show.

But the same folder name on the other user accounts is fine, but on mine
(the primary) it is invisible.

It's as if it's filtered the word out.

How is this possible and how to I correct it?????????

TIA,

KF

Via Explorer, check the permissions on this folder to ensure that your
ID can read it. Lack of the right permissions could explain why you
can't see what's already there. Further it can't create another once
since one already there.

I was able to put a folder called c:\Documents and Settings\myid\Start
Menu\programs\Utilities with no problem.

Bob:

No I have full rights (Admin rights) and the folder has existed for more
than a year. Its there and visible in Explorer and My Computer views, just
not when I use the GUI, Start > Programs >

If I name it anything, ANYTHING else, it shows, but the word UTILITIES makes
it invisible to the GUI.

All my other user accounts can see their UTILITIES folder but if I drag
theirs into mine, it disappears. If I drag mine to theirs, it reappears.

If I make mine a sub folder of another, it appears but if it is placed at
c:\Documents and Settings\myid\Start >Menu\programs it goes away.

I have renamed it for functionality but this is driving me crazy because it
shouldn't be possible.

TIA, KF

Have you yet confirmed that Admin has rights to this folder? Rights to
Administrators may have been revoked. Look at the permissions granted.

As I mentioned, I can create a folder named Utilities in what I think is
the same location, so I really doubt the issue is associated with any
special filtered names that XP desktop requires.

Rename it "Tools" and go have a long weekend.
