Can access home network but not internet

I have two computers connected to a home network and the internet via a router.
One of my Computers (running Windows XP Professional) is able to see the
router and network but not the internet. It is also able to share files over
the home network with my other PC.
If I ping the default gateway or the other PC, I get a response. However,
if I ping the address of the PC itself the request times out.
Also, I can ping 216.239.37.99 (the IP address of Google) and can enter this
in a web browser successfully, but cannot ping or access www.google.com.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Sounds like a DNS issue. Does your XP machine get its TCP/IP configuration
automatically from the router? most cable/dsl routers use DHCP to provide the
connected PC's with IP configuration. make sure your PC is obtaining the IP
address automatically and also make sure it is getting its DNS server address
automatically.

What are the i.p. addresses that are being assigned to the 2 PCs?

On the computer being discussed open Control Panel - Network
Connections.

Right-click on the icon for the network connection, select Status, go
to the Support tab and click on the Details button.

Post the information back here, especially the values for DHCP Server,
DNS Server, and Default Gateway. That may help to determine what is
going wrong.

Also, do you have any firewall software running on the PCs? That can
often interfere with Internet access because of configuration issues.
The NAT firewall in the router should provide reasonable firewall
protection, at least for a short period of testing, so try temporarily
shutting off any software firewalls and see if that improves things.

Good luck

Ron,

Many thanks for your offer of help.

Although I was not able to perform a system restore (all restore points from
prior to the problem arising had been deleted), I have been able to perform a
System State restore from a backup I took a week ago, and that appears to
have solved the problem. I've had to reapply programme and spyware updates,
but that's a small price to pay.

I have the same problem with my PC attached to the router via ethernet cable.
Every time I reset the router...reboot...the internet works for a short time
then drops off....the network connrctions still work and the ADSL is
connected and working correctly, however the entire internet connection for
the networ drops off. i use zone alarm on all the PC's connected to the
network. whenever I leave this PC off and connect to the internet via the
other PC's no problem...what is the problem with this rougue PC running WinXP?
