Can a video card increas overall system performance?

What I am curious about is this. My company purchased several new computers,
all XP Pro. with GeForce FX5200 video cards. They are, to my understanding,
high end video cards use for gaming systems. My boss is under the impression
that this will assist, (quicker) in the overall processing of the system. We
have to have our computers built with older AMD Athlon CPU’s because we still
run some DOS based programs and these programs run slower on newer chips.

So, does his theory hold true? To my knowledge, I don't believe it works
this way. The programs in question are lotus versions 3.4 and 5.

Sounds like a dos question to me?

Unlikely the premise is true that your boss contends in this specific
instance. The video chip, whether on a card or on the PC's motherboard,
does the same thing; process video. The video demand from Lotus is
miniscule compared to most stuff. Its a database program.

Probably would have been smarter to spring for a program that works in XP,
and had built-in conversions for your current Lotus stuff. Irregardless,
the high end graphics card is not needed. My suspicions are that the change
would shake up your business personnel too much, and IT headaches that come
with it.
