under File Options you can set the DEFAULT notification period.
otherwise when you create the calendar event you can change the notification period at that time.
after the fact, just edit the scheduled item and change the notification period.

Is there anyway to make windows calender show alerts when appointments are
getting close to the day like you can in outlook?
Yes, use the reminder.
You can set it from zero, to 2 weeks prior.
Reminders are supposed to show without Calendar running, but it doesn't work
for me. They don't show up until I open Calendar.
But then, I use Outlook for my main calendar.
