Calendar Magic V14.6

A

Alex Balfour

Calendar Magic V14.6 is now available at:

http://www.stokepoges.plus.com

and will also be available in the next few days from Simtel at:

http://www.simtel.net/pub/dl/55320.shtml

New features and bug fixes in V14.6 include:

Added television screens to the list of 2D objects in the geometry
calculator.

Added {n/k} star polygons to the list of 2D objects in the geometry
calculator. For a description of {n/k} star polygons, see:

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/StarPolygon.html

For those unfamiliar with star polygons, various explanatory tool-tips
have been provided for some of the relevant labels and text-boxes.

A correlation constant may now be defined for the date of commencement
of the Mayan long count calendar system via a new command button on the
Date Conversions screen. Two widely used values by experts are 584283
(the default in Calendar Magic) and 584285.

Sikh religious festivals are now processed for "On This Date".

Added dates of Hola Mohalla, Bandi Chhor Divas and Parkash Guru Nanak
Sahib, for years in the range 2003 to 2020, to the list of Sikh
religious festivals.

Added the result of the calculation of the relevant Mayan "Lord of the
Night" to the date conversions output.

Added National Doctors' Day (March 30) to the list of observed days for
the USA.

Added the calculation of the circumradius and inradius of triangles to
the geometry calculator.

Incorporated improved values for Delta-T, the difference between
Dynamical Time and Universal Time, for years in the range 1980 to 2014.

Improved the wording of the note after the British Julian/Gregorian
calendar for 1752.

When adding the contents of any memory location to the stack, by
left-clicking one of the buttons M1, M2, .... M7, any unstacked input in
the main display is now automatically added to the stack before the
contents of the memory location.

In the geometry calculator, switching between degrees and radians no
longer causes all input and output boxes to be cleared. Instead, angle
values are converted accordingly.

Enjoy!

I still wish you'd incorporate the ability to print a standard wall
calendar into your program. By that I mean the example at this page:

http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/monthly.html

Hi John,

I assume that the issue is one of appearance rather than content, since
the "Month Calendars" button generates the required data. Is it merely a
matter of printing a month calendar horizontally centred on a page and
using a larger font? Or am I missing some other requirement?

Alex,
The output is very tiny. It would be nice if one could print a full
sheet month calendar in either portrait or landscape.

Great program otherwise though. And I guess a person could always use
something like this one to generate the printout:

http://www.waseo.de/en/Products/Freeware1/DateTimeSoftware/CalPaint1/calpaint1.html

although it's a little gaudy.

Here's another one that's better:

Hi John,

The reason I made the font so tiny was that the original request for
month calendars came from a user who wished to have them on business
card size pieces of thin cardboard!

However, I'll think about the problem for the next release but maybe
your idea of using other products is a better solution. Alternatively,
you can always copy and paste the output from Calendar Magic into a word
processor, using a fixed-width font, then reformat to your heart's
content. The readme file contains an example of a full-year calendar
produced in this way.

Cheers,

Alex

Yep.

Or much better one like :

http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=2004&country=29

What would also be handy would be a way to add important dates.

Where the moon info is have an option to add/replace that info with a
legend eg.

(.....) PTA meeting.
[.....] Bowls club meeting.
___ Golf club meeting.

Obviously in a black and white printout the options are limited, BUT
IMO it would be better to be able to mark eg. three dates in a month
than none at all.

Regards, John.

Why not an option for multiple sizes ? Eg. A3, A4, A5 ? :)

John & John,

An easier alternative would be for me to allow a user to choose the
print font size. I think I'll start by working in this direction.

John,
It appears to me that Alex is much more interested in his program
providing information about how calendars function, but I agree that
if he were to incorporate some scheduling/reminder features, his
program would quickly take over the niche.
A feature I really like and which is demonstrated well in Sun Clock
Classic:

http://www.mapmaker.com/shadowfacts/sunclock.asp

allows one to print a month calendar that shows the phases of the moon
with a small moon icon in the lower left hand corner of each day.
Along with a reminder/schedule feature, Calendar Magic would kick ass
(even moreso.)

Just suggestions, FWIW. Hope I'm not overstepping my bounds. 80)>

Hi John,

Your absolutely correct about my main interest -- I tend to leave pretty
output to others.

However, I have tried to respond to your and the other John's
requirements as follows:

1. In Month Calendars, the size of the font may now be specified when
printing the calendar for a month.

2. Added a "Print Month with Reminders" command button to the Reminders
by Month screen. The size of the font may also be specified for printing
the month calendar portion of the print-out.

If either or both of you would like to try out these new features and
provide further feedback, please let me know.

With best wishes,

Alex

Hi John,

Thank you for pointing SunClock out to me. It's a brilliant but slightly
quirky program in my opinion. It took me a few minutes to figure out how
to run it when I want it to run, rather than having it loaded
automatically at boot-up.

Cheers,

Alex,
Quoting me from another post:

"Biggest problems I have with it are that they pretty much have the
right click and left click functions on the tray icon reversed, and
when you set it up to use the "Sun" display for the screen saver, it
always switches back to using the "Clock" display. In fact, I don't
think such a program needs to reside in the tray. Still, the sun map
works well."

You bet! What should I download? Is it a beta or the main download?

John,

It will be an early beta version of V14.7.

Send me an email address directly and I'll send it to you as a zipped

Hi Alex,

However, I have tried to respond to your and the other John's
requirements as follows:
1. In Month Calendars, the size of the font

Type ? Style eg. bold etc. ?
may now be specified when
printing the calendar for a month.

Good, what about if printing a year calendar ?
2. Added a "Print Month with Reminders" command button to the Reminders
by Month screen. The size of the font may also be specified for printing
the month calendar portion of the print-out.

What if someone wants to print a year calendar with certain dates
highlighted ? Is that possible ?
If either or both of you would like to try out these new features and
provide further feedback, please let me know.

Thanks. You know my address. :)

Bye the way, your flyover help for Star Polygon density k is better
than it was BUT a "normal" person would have no idea what number
to use. Maybe some examples would help eg.

5 pointed star k = 2
6 pointed star k = 3
11 pointed star k = 4 etc. ?

Regards, John.

Hi John,
Type ? Style eg. bold etc. ?

Let's take it a step at a time! The font has to be fixed width and, to
me, there's nothing much to choose between fixed width fonts. Also, you
can copy and paste Calendar Magic output to a word processor.
Good, what about if printing a year calendar ?

I'll add a font size combo box to year calendars if you and John Corliss
consider it advisable.
What if someone wants to print a year calendar with certain dates
highlighted ? Is that possible ?

Not at the moment and I'm not sure how I would provide it. But, again,
you can copy and paste output to a word processor, and then highlight
appropriate dates.
Thanks. You know my address. :)

Done!

Bye the way, your flyover help for Star Polygon density k is better
than it was BUT a "normal" person would have no idea what number
to use. Maybe some examples would help eg.

5 pointed star k = 2
6 pointed star k = 3
11 pointed star k = 4 etc. ?

In the next beta version, I'll add an example to the flyover help for
the text-box in which the value of k is entered. By the way, are you
aware that, with say n = 11, you can set k equal to 2, 3, 4 or 5? Each
value of k produces a different star polygon.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex,

This is my first post in this forum, though I have browsed and
downloaded NOT nuggets but chunks of Gold.An Excellent Site.

To come back to the topic,Yours is an absolutely excellent Calender
Program.Let me explain.I am an orthodox Hindu from India and for our
rituals we follow our "Panchanga" an almanac that works on lunar
calender. And it is just not easy to arrive at a date to hold our
monthly and obligatory rituals when ones parent passes off. This
ofcourse has to be done based on the Lunar Calendar and it is not the
same English date. And to complicate matters further there are
additional "Adhika"(Additional)months added on to keep the years
straight.
And we perforce have to consult the priests to know the exact date to
hold our rituals. But for last Seven months I have followed your
Calendar AND never once has it been wrong.

A Great Program and thanks a lot.
