Calculation mode retention

TIA for your time
Can anyone advise me on the logic of the calculation mode and it's
association with saved files and open files. For example, if I save a
workbook with calculation set to manual and the close it and open a new file
the calculation mode will revert to automatic. If I re-open the first file
the mode will restore to manual (for both files). I'm not sure what happens
with a seperate instanation of excel? There are many variations... Anywhere I
can read up on this?

Calculation is an Application level setting
My understanding is the following:

Tools>Options>Calculation sets the default for Your PC
If Calculation is set differently for a file it "overrides" the Application
Default while it is open

Using a separate instance of Excel for the file should allow different
calculation modes for different files

Calculation is determined by the first workbook opened by excel when Excel
starts.

Opening a workbook in an existing instance of excel does not change the
calculation setting.

The setting can be changed manually.
