calculating certain cells in a column (access 2000)

i have 1 column with 2 different codes, 1 (male) & 2(female). I need to
calculated all the 1's & then calculate (with other figures) all the 2's
separetely & then combine them again into 1 column. i have done a query but
once i combine it again, the calculation gets messed up.
