Just subtract one from the other and format the cell as [h]:mm:ss, i.e.
enter this formula in cell A3:

=A2-A1

Hope this helps.

Excel time calculations

please help me!

maybe you can help me with one: i can add the time as total hours from 2 other cells, but only within a 24 hour parameter. as soon as hours adds up to most than 24 hours, the total column goes a bit loopy. what formatting do you need in the totals column, for the hours to add past 24 hours. so for exmample - my timesheet might say I've worked:

08:45 am - 17:15 pm = 8.5 hours x 5 days = 42:30 hours (for teh week)

the 42:30 figure is the one I can't acheive!

thanks, H

Good one Pete.

You may also use this (A2-A1)*24 to get a more exact hour (with
decimal). This one doesn't require you to change the format of the cell
:)

As far as I'm aware, you can use the formatting: right click, Format Cells, Custom, and about half way down you have the layout you need. you usually still need to add a colon though for the time though - a full stop is not always recognised. but for the date, you can use a stop.dash-slash/ or whatever between date numbers.
Hope it helps a little, Cheers, H
