calculate report by date from two tables

I am a novice on Access.
I have a table that inputs a date and a daily market value for different
stocks/shares
I have a second table that inputs purchases and sales each day of the
different stocks/shares - balances may not change every day but there may be
more than one transaction in a day
I want a report that calculates the current market value of the current
holding of stocks/shares
I have worked out how to produce a report with a running total of the
stocks/shares but want the report to "look up" the date and report back what
that days market price was so that I can do a calculation of the value
Is there an easy way to do this?
Any assistance would be appreciated
