You need what is called a crossover cable. Sorry I don't know if it has any
particular 'part' number or official designation.

Thanks,
Went and bought a cat5 crossover cable plugged both ends into the
ports normally used to connect to my cable modem-ran the file and tranfer
autodetect and the 2 computers did not see each other????they were directly
connected to each other;and not to the internet. Any help? The network
wizard did have a drop-down that gave the option of com1 or com3? tried
both-no success. They both are running XP Home SP2 and updated till today.
What am I missing?

I think that you selected the wrong transfer method in the FAST
Wizard. Select "Home or small office network", not "Direct cable".
