C:\WINDOWS\System32 Folder Opens After Bootup

Sam

My neighbor has a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP installed.
His computer was running very slow and apparently had some spyware and
virus/trojans. He purchased/installed both the Ad-aware and NAV 2004
programs
on his computer. After multiple scans, it appears that all the junk was
deleted except
New.Net, which I think I have a fix for, and a second problem that I don't
know how
to resolve. Every time the computer is booted up, the C:\WINDOWS\System32
folder
is opened. As best as I can tell, I did not see any entries in the Run key
or a startup
folder that would be applicable to the System32 folder. Can this be the
results of
spyware and/or virus still on his computer? I also checked the Add/Remove
listing
to see if New.Net was listed there, but it was not.

Any help would be very much appreciated, Sam.

P.S. What a pain in the ??? to have to clean up a computer. I wish the
politicians would get smart and legislate some stiff penalties for the
scumbags who write and send out such negative/destructive/privacy invasion
software.

Greetings --

This can be caused by a blank entry, such as can be left behind by
an incomplete program removal, in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and/or
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
