I have WIN XP Prof sp1 running on an Intel chip.
I re-booted my notebook and received the following message
at boot time:
"Windows unable to start due to missing or corrupt file
c:\windows\system32\config\system"

The file in the above folder path has no extension it is
named 'system'.

The night before I updated my McAfee Anti-virus patterns
as I do once every couple of weeks. The next day I re-
booted, as one must unfortunately due all too much on the
Win OS and then the above error showed up.

Any ideals...What is the 'system' file used for...?

Here's a post I saved:

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt"
where Xp won't boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit
