C Drive capacity

I recently re-installed windows xp pro on a laptop after having numerous
performance issues.

I tried to install the windows xp sp 2 and upgrade the internet explorer
version, but received the message that I didn't have enough space for the
install. I felt that had to be a mistake as I had just re-installed windows
on the laptop and have very few data files in place. However, after looking
more carefully, I realize that the capacity of the C drive is a mere 7.84MB,
while the D drive has a capacity of more than 55GB.

I'm good at using the computer, but not as sure about setting everything up
from the start...I think I may not have allocated enough space for the C
drive during installation and this is where most of the application files are
stored for programs. Of course I am still having performance issues and the
computer stops at will.

How do I increase the space on the C drive at this point or is there some
alternative to remedy this issue??

Method 1
Use a third party partition manager to shrink D:, and increase the size of
C:

Method 2
Using the XP install CD at boot time, remove both partitions. Create a
larger partition for C:, remainder for D: Using slipstreamed version of XP
install CD w/SP2 embedded will save you some time and some space on the hard
drive.

Any wanted file data on D: should be backed up to other media first in
either case. The XP partition size should allow at least 1GB of unused
space after all 3rd party apps are installed as assurance of operation.
This will allow a faster defragmentation.
