Bypassing Password

I bought a second hand PC from an old guy which belonged to his son. To cut a
long story short neither of them could remember the password. The OS is
Windows 2K Pro.
I don't know if it was factory installed or not. From what I could gather
from newgroups and other sources the only possibility was to re-install (
I've downloaded
the 4 set up discs) and a password recovery key programme that are all now
on floppies. Is this going to work? if so, what is the exact procedure? The
computer
starts up until the log-on window. I've tried all the options on f8, but
cannot get the computer to start with the start-up disks. What am I doing
wrong?

You can use a password cracker but better to start a new install. To do a
clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member, your wisest course
of action would probably be to format the hard drives and start fresh.
You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may have
filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because the
original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

I don't have the installation CD - I have however downloaded the files and
created 4
floppy bootdisks , but I don't know how to boot the PC with them.

Put disk one in the drive and restart the computer. You do realize you need
the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom?

| how exactly do I boot the set up disks?

I don't have the install CD - only the floppies I created from the download
from bootdisk.com - I can't find a licence number anywhere - ok at least now
I've figured out how to boot the disks thanks to you. How can I change the
password so I can use the computer?

That what I thought and why I mentioned it.

You might ask the seller for the install media.

| Does that mean I'm (or the computer) is screwed?

Without the installation CD, the Startup diskettes are of no use to you
- their only purpose is to start the installation routine on computers
that cannot boot from the Win2K installation CD.
