bus speed

Normally my bus speed runs the same speed as my processor speed. When i plug
in my speed slows to 1/4 to 1/2 the processor speed. When i run back to
battery only it speed back up. What is wrong? and How do i fix it?
 
Must be using a laptop that's configured to conserve battery power, most
likely your CPU has throttled back also.

Hi,

I will assume you are talking about a laptop. First, the processor speed is
a lot faster than the bus speed. It may be that when you are running on
battery the processor is slowed down to decrease heat emissions. This
reduces the need for the fan and conserves battery power. Under normal
power, it (the processor) speeds back up to full throttle, which will be
considerably faster than the maximum bus speed.

Im talking about the speed it shows on general tab of the system properties
right in front of the memory...that is the one that changes ie: it will read
209 mhz with my laptop plugged in and on battery power will read 1.7 ghz
(which is the speed of my processor.

Yes. That's right and that's what the others have already told you. Your
laptop is doing processor throttling, slowing it down to conserve
battery life when not plugged in and then running at full speed
(2.09GHz, not "mhz") when off battery.

This is normally handled by power management software provided by the
laptop mftr. For instance, if you have a Dell it is the Quickset
program. If you have a Thinkpad, it's something else (I forget what
it's called). So look to see what power management software you have
installed, but normally one would just allow the throttling because it
is A Good Thing on a laptop.

why would it throttle back when plugged in to the power supply and speed up
when only on battery it sounds like that is backwards to me

What you posted is conflicting. Your first post said:

In this last post, you must have made a typo because no modern processor
is running at "209 mhz". It must have said "2.09GHz" which is the speed
of your processor. Then you said that on battery the speed is "1.7 ghz"
which must mean 1.7GHz and is the slower speed throttled down.

So your posts don't make sense. And what you're referring to is not "bus
speed" anyway; it is processor speed. You are either reading something
incorrectly or there is the possibility that the charger on the
motherboard is faulty. If the latter, contact the laptop mftr. for
replacement of the motherboard.
