Bullets all wrong since upgrading to Win XP

I recently upgraded a clients machine from win98 (office 2000 sp1) to winxp
(office 2000 sp3),
Problem: over 700 documents have changed or are being change when i open
them, before all the page breaks and page formating was 100% correct, now I
have orphaned paragraphs, as well as completely different bullets (1st & 2nd
level) have change to "R" & "TM" & "u"
Anyone ever seen this before? heard about it about 3 years back (the person
who mentioned it to me didnt find a solution - user had to redo all their
documents formatting), havn't been able to find a solution via google or MS
Partner online concierge programme either. Please assist if possible.

1. Likely their normal.dot file was customized with styles, and you should
get it off the old PC and put it on the new one.
2. The funky bullets is 'cause there's a missing font somewhere...
