Buildin a NEW PC

Pantz

hello all , i will be building a new PC this week, just waiting for the
parts to arrive ,
AMD Phenom IIX4 940
Gigabyte GA-MA720 MB
Geforce 512 9600 GT
4Mges corsair 1066ram
Hatachi 1T sata HD
here is my Question , since windows XP can only see 137 Gig of the HD how
will i go about getting it to see the full amount of the HD , from what i
understand if i go into the BIOS of the new MB and set it to see the SATA
drive as the primary drive, will XP see the FULL size drive during the
install ? , or will it ask for the SATA drivers from a floppy disk ( as a
3rd party disk) ( i dont have a floppy drive ) or do i not load the sata
drivers at the prompt when it is asked during the XP install ? , during the
install i will be partioning the HD for 100gig just for the OS .... any
help or suggestions will be greatly appriciates

Thanks in advance

Hi Pantz,

Since XP can only see? I install drives all the time and that
limitation has never come up. I would think since you have a new MB, XP
should be able to "see" the SATA drive without having to install any
drivers. But if not, they should be included with the MB.

Everything I read about any 137 gig limit was either a limitation with a
controller, BIOS, or XP pre SP1 (128 gig limit).

You would load the drivers if needed at install. You are prompted at
the beginning to press (F6 I believe) to install additional drivers.

If Setup can't see all the drive to begin with, exit and restart and
then load the drivers. If it sees all the drive, then choose a size for
Windows, install Windows, and then configure the rest of the drive after
Windows is installed, using Disk Management.

Set the BIOS to "Enhanced" mode.
This will allow XP to be installed on SATA
drives without installing SATA drivers.

Use Windows SP1 or later and there
is no 137GB limit on drive size.

Pantz:
As you have heard from Terry & JS, your system will detect the full capacity
of your 1 TB HDD as long as you're installing an XP OS that contains any
Service Pack (SP1 or SP2 or SP3).

Assuming you're installing a non-RAID configuration (and it seems obvious
that this is so since you're working with a single HDD), there will be *no*
necessity to install an auxiliary SATA controller driver during setup
(installation of the OS). The default BIOS settings for that motherboard
will provide SATA HDD detection. Should, at a later date, you decide to
implement a RAID configuration, auxiliary SATA controller drivers will be
necessary to establish that configuration. The drivers will be available via
the motherboard's installation CD. You will need to carefully review your
Gigabyte MB's User's Manual to effect that RAID configuration.

As you're obviously aware during the OS setup routine you can
multi-partition your HDD according to your personal needs.
