Build an $800 Gaming PC

Last year's $800 gaming PC was a bargain, but had significant
compromises. This year's model is a hot-rod rig that offers
impressive performance. What a difference a year makes!

Good article but I think some of those component prices are a little
optimistic (except possibly from bottom feeder vendors). I imagine you
could still do it for under a grand from the more reputable vendors, but
shipping charges could quickly mount up when dealing with more than one.

Not bad, but I can do THAT box better, and for a lot less.
First: go with the Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939
Antec SLK1650B with 350Watt Smart supply,
and that trade off gets you a much better mobo
and quieter fans.

also the ATI X800 is dropping in price rapidly, and it is a far better
card
than the ULTRA NOISY 6600GT . You will hate that fan noise !!!!!!!

Sony dvd combo everything is about $50 at Mwave.com, and
I warn you not to buy LG. They are not compatible with much
of anything ... pure junk.

350W Smartpower is marginal, asking for trouble on a good
gaming box, IMO. It might work ok due to lower power
requirements of the 6600GT though.

Untrue.

Any particular card has the fan selected by the
manufacturer. It would be just as easy to buy a loud X800
or a quiet 6600GT. If one wants GOOD cooling and low noise
they must resolve to buy an aftermarket heatsink (or DIY
'sink) if they don't know the noise levels of a particular
card beforehand.

It's rather pointless to suggest a more expensive card is
"far better", as that has always been the case. The point
was building the box at the low price-point.

I agree, if one spends $800 they ought to be a better
optical (burner), though many put the NEC 3520 at the top of
the bang for buck category these days. The Sony is just an
overpriced Liteon, IIRC.

I have a Leadtek 6600GT, which is approximately the same price, and it
certainly doesn't seem particularly loud. Since so many companies market a
6600GT nowadays, fan noise is probably a function of the brand. X800s are
also marketed under different brand names, with different fans, and they
probably require more cooling anyway.
