Buggy Automatic Screen Refresh

I am running Windows XP Professional on a Compaq Evo N800v laptop. I
installed SP2 a few months ago.

The problem I have was also present before SP2, and I really don't remember
when it started to appear; it is like this: the screen actually gets
refreshed every 1-2 seconds, which is very annoying especially when I pop-up
the menus under "Start" button and try to find and select an application;
after the 1-2 seconds interval the menus drop down automatically, like I
would refresh the screen somehow; it also happens in any application that has
menu bars with drop-down menus (e.g. Microsoft Word); it also happens when I
lock the computer and the "unlock" login window appears on the screen: if I
type a password and wait for 1-2 seconds, the screen is refreshed and the
password is lost so that I must type it again.

As you can imagine, this is very annoying, especially for me because I am
using the laptop intensivelly and I have a lot of applications installed and
runnung on it.

Can someone help, please?

Thank you.

USB Hub Power Management - disable : Start/run, type DEVMGMT.MSC , then
rightclick each USB Hub device, Properties, uncheck the box on the Power
Management tab.

Sorry, but even though I have done what you said, it's not working, I mean
the behavior is the same.

Any other hints? Thanks.
