Bug in Excel?

Hi.

If you create a .csv file, and you only paste the value "ID;xy" into it, and
open it in Excel from explorer, Excel crashes.

I've tested the behavior on Excel 2000, 2002 and 2003. Both Danish and
English version.

If you open up Excel, and import the .csv file manually, Excel does not
crash.

I was unable to find any KB article that mentions this problem.

Is it a bug or misuse of the product? Comments..

It looks like a bug to me (also xl2003, USA version). (I don't think that any
data should cause a program to crash like this.)

But when the first two characters of a file are: ID, excel wants to see a SYLK
file.

I'd stay away from adding those characters to the .csv file.

(From the department of the obvious, huh?)

I confirmed the crash (XL2002 US version; Windows XPPro SP2) on
double-clicking the file. However, Excel also crashes for me when opening the
file from within Excel.

Excel also crashes opening the file from within Excel after renaming it to a
*.txt file.

How'd you happen upon this?

Hi Ron.

I stumbled upon it when I exported some data from a database.

If this is a live bug, how do I report it to Microsoft?

I don't know. But there is stuff on the MSKB about problems with SYLK files
dating back a few years.

One work around is to open the file in a text editor, and prepend a <space> or
single quote to ID.

One way is to send an email to:
(e-mail address removed)

Put excel in the subject.

There's a page on one of the millions of MS that allows you to report bugs,
too. But I can't find it now.

I reported it this morning in a private location.
