I am running a qwest dsl line on a dell 8250 with windows xp. My browsers (I
have tried many different browsers) stop working after a period of time yet
at the same time I can receive e-mail through Outlook. The other computer on
my network also running xp has no problem with this. If I reboot, it will
work for a while again. Sometimes it works well for hours but eventually
stops working.

Pop mail servers are usually separate from internet servers, that is why your
email is still working when your internet isn't. You provider or your system
may be set to disconnect after a certain number of minutes of no activity
passes.

already did that

Yeesh, my Quicktime Player was getting in my way to send a response here. It
kept me from being able to put the cursor at the end of the last line, and it
highlighted the entire message instead. Multiple New Messages would pop up
because the first one wouldn't open in a timely manner. I had to click Quicktime
out of my Systray just to type this. I think I'll take it out of the msconfig
startup menu by unchecking it and rebooting and see if that helps my cause. My
browser is so damn sluggish and unresponsive at times when opening a new IE6
window. This just started happening this week. AV scan and AdAware scans failed
to improve my sitch. I ran SFC, no diff. I defragged the HDD, no diff.

It just might be the gov't intruding on our computers without our knowlege?!?

I changed my MaxFileCache in System.ini (Win 98SE) from 98125 (or some number
like that) to 384000 (I
have 384MB of RAM). Hopefully the machine will work better.

Ah, I clicked on the auto-clean link earlier in the thread just now and it took
two minutes for the webpage to open, the CPU was pinned at 100% or near-abouts
the whole time.

I ran auto-clean an hour ago and dumped all of the deleted items into the
recycle bin so I could restore back what shouldn't be thrown away. It found 904
files to toss and I wound up restoring 500 of them because they shouldn't have
been picked out for deletion to begin with. Dangerous program for $18.95!

I uninstalled that Java 1.5 Update 6 and now explorer.exe seems to have settled
back to normal.
