browser won't display some web pages properly

I posted this note last week and received a recommendation
that I reinstall IE 6. I did that but am having the same
problems. In addition, my daughter cannot access pdf
files on the school mock final exam site and I am in
trouble (Help).

Running W 98 SE.

The problem was:
I have problems displaying some web pages. The browser
does not load the pages properly. I get the following
problems:
-when I click on a link to access a page the File Download
window pops up and does not allow me access to the site; or
-the banner ads are blown out of proportion;
-ads are displayed over the text of an article;
-pictures are displayed in windows that they were not
intended for;
-I get the source code for the page but not the page;
-I can't access the site at all and get the page that says
the web site is not available.

This does not happen on all sites, only some

If you are desperate, you can go into tools, options,
security tab and reset the security on the internet zone
to Medium.
As for pdf files, make sure you have the Adobie Reader
installed (free) so you can see them. It also runs as an
ActiveX control, so you need to verify they can run.

Download and install Ad-aware, but be sure to click on CHECK FOR UPDATES
NOW. That way you'll have latest adware and spyware definition for that
program. Also, download and install SPYBOT - Search & Destroy. Do the same
thing and update it's definitions. Check your computer with both programs
(one at the time) and I'm 99% sure that your computer is full of adware and
spyware. When programs finds all those pests, just erase them.

Also, you should download and run HijackThis. Note: Don't erase anything
untill you visit some of HijackThis forums and ask those experts for advice.
You should post a message with description of your problem, and HijackThis
log file which you get when HijackThis finishes scanning... just click on
SAVE LOG, find your file in directory where you saved it, open it, copy
(CTRL+C) everything from that log and paste it (CTRL+V) at the end of the
message that you want to send to HijackThis forum (Help request). Here is
the link for "Tom Coyote" forum:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=33

I hope this helps...

Cheers !

Hi Thank you for your response. I ran and updated Ad
Aware and installed and ran Spybot without any change to
my problem. Any other suggestions?

OK, but you didn't say had Ad-aware (or/and Spybot) found and report any
suspicious files ? You should be able see them in the main window. When
Ad-aware finishes with checking, just mark all those lines in report list
and erase them. That is very important. Why would we search for them if we
find them at the end and then let them stay in your computer... that way we
didn't make any change.

As I said, it's very important to erase all that adware and spyware that
Ad-Aware reports.

Cheers!

Hi Wesley

Thank you for replying. Sorry for not making it clearer
but I did remove all the files identified by both Ad-
aware and Spybot. I cleaned everything out and still
couldn't acess certain web sites properly. Of particular
importance at this stage is the pdf exam at:
http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/pdfs/0301bi_P.pdf

OK Craig... I really don't know what to check next. At least your computer
is adware and spyware free now.
That .pdf page works great on my computer... I really don't know what to do
next. You'll have to wait for someone else's response, someone who is little
more experienced with that problem than me.

If this can help, I'm willing to send you that .pdf file if it's so
important for your daughter. I saved that page as pdf file and I have it
here. The file is 682 Kb. For me it's not problem at all, 'cause I have
Rogers Cable Hi-speed internet (10.0 mbps), but let me know is it gonna be
problem for you...

I hope this helps a bit...

P.S. Please, can you explain one more time, what is exactly happening when
you try to open that web site (.pdf exam). Please be specific, every little
detail can help someone to solve that problem...

Regards !

Thanks for your offer but I have already made that
arrangement. I talked to our IT guy at work today and he
suggested that I may have to reload windows and reinstall
all my programs in order to start from scratch.

OK, that's even better solution... I believe you'll fix that problem after
reinstalling complete system...

Cheers!
