browser loses data pressing Back or Refresh

I just completed giving an exam to a group of students
using a web-based testing system. It worked really well
except for a problem with about 4 out of 41 students.

Within the test I had a link to another web page. After
using that link, when the students used the Back button to
return to the test, their answers had been erased and they
had to start over. Likewise, when some of the students
pressed the Submit button (part of the exam software) some
of them were told that the page had expired and they
needed to reload the page. When they pressed the Refresh
button, their answers were also erased. (I unfortunately
didn't think to verify what version of IE they were using
nor what version of Windows.) Any ideas why these things
might be occurring on some but not all computers?
