Out of curiosity, what is happening when I open my browser with regard to the
time it takes to load my web portal? Specifically, why dows it take 30 to 40
seconds to load (aftter the computer has been idle awhile) but then will load
in 3 to 8seconds immediately after?I know web information is being stored in
"cache" but does the 'cache' memory empty itself if the computer sits awhile
or performs some other operation? I have a hi-speed connection and am running
xp ,clodk speed is 1gig.
Is 30 to 40 seconds a good loading time?

Two questions.

1) Which browser are you using?

2) When you say it takes that much time to load, are you talking about the
time it takes for the browser to start or for the page to load (I.E. browser
says "connecting to....." for 30-40 seconds and then loads.)

Jared,
Thanks for answering. I have two browsers,Internet Explorer and Firefox.
They both behave similarly. To clarify ,the loading times(actual data
transfer time after the site hs been connected) varies between a small
fraction of a second to 5 seconds based on how recently I have used the
comptuter.Thils is what it looks like:
1.Hitting the browser icon to the time a message appearing on the lower
left screen takes 1 to 10 seconds.
2.Various messages appear after this initial time which takes from 1 to
a40 seconds.
3.When the website is connected and the portal page starts to load ,it
takes .1 to 5 sedonds.

It seems to me that some computers normally connect to the
selected portal in 1 to 3 seconds or less (as a general rule i.e. high speed
connection etc.).

Why does the time vary so much and are these normal time ranges?
Could it be that the site that is being contacted by the browser also has a
"cache" memory and is prepared to respond more rapidly on the second hit
after a short period?
