Broswer Hijacking by Microsoft Update!!??!!!!

Ross

My internet explorer always starts up in the Microsoft
Windows Update web page even when I set it to blank or
some other specific web page (e.g. Google).

My copy of Ad-Aware, reports a registry alter event every
time I open an Internet explorer window and then the
Windows Update web page comes up.

I've reset this two dozen times now. It seems this started
to happen after the last time I went to the Update page to
actually update my windows XP.

Has anyone else seen this. Is this related to a new update
from Microsoft?

I wouldn't mind it so much since I could just navigate to
another page, but it triggers AdWatch everytime I open a
window, so I have to close that window first, then
navigate away form the Microsoft Update page. It is a
bother!

one referring to Alexa is by way of being a spurious reaction of
AdAware. It refers to an adware system, but its works are used by
Internet explorer to support the 'related links'' feature. If it refers
to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. . .\{c95fe080- etc
then that is what it is, and you can add it to AdAware's ignore list

One referring to about:blank in Internet Explorer - Main - StartPage is
normal if you choose blank as Home page, but may also refer to a hijack
attempt. It sounds rather as if you have got such a Hijack, to a page
*pretending* to be Windows Update, but which is hoping you will then
download something nasty for yourself. Go to
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
ands the link from its Quickfix section to CWShredder in the first
instance; then follow up the other precautions there
