Broadband Problems

Ok I wasn't sure where to post this so I will try here. I play battlefield
vietnam. When I play online I can play fine for about 30mins or so, then my
ping starts slowly increasing to the point where the game is no longer
playable. This happens on all servers I have tried so I know its not the
server.

Specs:
Amd 2500 + (Barton)
Asus A7N8X
512 Dual channel DDR (Checks out with memtest86)
80 GB WD HDD
Geforce 4 mx 440
Antec 350 Watt PSU
Yamaha 8X8X24 CD-RW
Floppy
I have recently done a low level format and doen a fresh install of XP onto
the HDD, as of current all I have loaded on is: Battlefield Vietnam, all
updates from windows update, Norton anti-virus.

I am running a 1Mb cable connect through a router that doesn't have a built
in hardware firewall. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA
Chris

First things that jump at me are:

1.) Ditch Norton auto-protect. Having it running in the background is an unknown variable.
2.) I'm thinking heat; check all of the temps in your case, as well as voltages. Get MotherBoardMonitor and log
temps and voltages while you play to see if anything is amiss.
2.a) Also heat related, does your modem thingy have enough ventillation?

Also, if, when your ping gets high, you disconnect and then quickly reconnect, does it then take another 30 minutes
or so until you have problems again?

I am no expert, I don't even have broadband, but could it be that other
gamers could be 'attacking' you by bombarding you with data.

When I play say pool online via dial up I will get a slow ping if
I am doing a large download as the ping will get stuck in the
download traffic. our problem sounds similar.

Can you monitor the traffic on your line?
Do you have a firewall (software) showing lots of blocked
activity?

Also do you always play at the same time of day? Maybe you hit
a traffic peak?

Do you have fixed or dynamic IP address?

Also maybe you are running out of free memory and the harddrive
paging is slowing you down? Monitor your free memory.
