I have installed a Trust router and successfully
connected my 2 desktop and 1 laptop PC's to the internet
through an ADSL modem that goes through the WAN port.
I've managed to turn off all firewalls (apart from the
one in the firmware of the router). I can ping each
machine from any other machine. When I use ipconfig/all
I see all the DHCP stuff that agrees with my router,
except the Node Type sometimes shows Broadcast on my
cabled PC but is mostly Unknown on all three. In the
Network Connections I've got Client for Microsoft
Networks , File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks , NetBEUI Protocol , NELink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS
Compatible Transport Protocol and Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) .
Issuing net use x:192.168.1.101\Backup. Where is the
address of the other I can ping and Backup is the
sharename of the directory that is shared on that PC, I
get:
System error 67 has occurred.
The network name cannot be found.
I can even remotely take control of any machine from any
other machine using Remote Desktop Connection, but cannot
use the Copybook to cut&paste data from one to the other
or copy files directly. In the Microsoft Windows Network
I can see the workgroup Albion, which is the name of the
workgroup on all the PC's and under the workgroup name I
can see the 3 names of the computers I have, MESH,
Siemens (the laptop) and Upstairs. However, when I click
on the name of a PC that is not the one I am using I get
the message:
\\(PC name) is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer
I've been to the folders I want to share and
designated them Share this folder, but when I try to add
users from the network to the Permissions only the local
PC appears under Locations, the network does not. Under
File Options/View I've switched Use simple file sharing
on and off.
I've gone into the Local and Group Policies and
tried to change User Rights Assignments / Access this
computer from the network to include the other computers
on the network, but when I come to finalise the amendment
I'm stopped by the message:
Failed to save the local policy database.
All the PC's are running XP professional, albeit
on the laptop with only 64meg of RAM and a PII processor
it does go rather slowly, but that's because I don't want
two desktop PC's tied up whilst I keep reconfiguring the
settings of anything that might get them to talk to each
other.
If there is anything that anybody can tell me
that I might have got wrong please let me know soon.
Thanks in anticipation,
Malcolm D. Morris.
