When connecting to broadband (for more than ~10minutes), I find that I
cannot
disconnect from the broadband and when I try to shutdown it will not
shutdown properly. The computer will hang on the 'saving your settings'
screen.
I'm going slightly mad: i don't want to turn off my pc pushing the power
button for >4sec anymore!!!
I have read all the Ms Kb, newsgroup and tech site but I still have not
resolved it...
I have to say that I am quite expert with computer and i have already tried
a lot of solutions without success!
PLEASE HELP!

I have done all tjose things...
I have run the updated spy bot and correct all "errors".
I have nav2004 with full updates and full system scan...
I have all win xp updates with SP1 too.

thanks anyway.
if you have more suggestions, please post it

do you have some 3rd party firewall installed so you can see if there's some
outbound net traffic just to see incase there's trojan or stuff that is not
picked by anything yet?

well i click on the icon and select disconnect, but obviously it doesn't
work.
Then I try to stop process with ctrl+alt+del but no success anyway.
Then i do start, switch off, shutdown and the closing procedure hang at the
blu screen "saving your setting"...

No i'm sorry but i have no firewall, neither micrsoft firewall included with
win xp.

To get the broadband account, did your service provider require/request
you to install any special software? If yes, then it could be this
software is flawed; in which case, should be discussing this with them.

By any chance have you connected to any resources out on the network
that your XP box is still trying to access, or close down? If the
network is "down", and then during shutdown it tries to access network
resources that aren't there it will take time. Or, due to the size of
data that you are sending or receiving from network during shutdown it
takes a long time.

Not a broadband problem, but I have a very long shutdown on my laptop
when connected to network simply because XP wants to copy my entire
profile across to the file server. The profile files are unnecessarily
huge and I'm working to get rid of this problem by moving files, e.g.
Outlooks's, outside the profile.

well my service provider doesn't special software...
I have to run the installer for adsl modem driver which auto-sets-up my
connection and install connection monitor software.
But it can't be the problem because i tried to remove it from starting from
msconfig tool and i still have this problem...
i thought it might have been norton antivirus but i removed it from boot
start and the problem was there again...
i begin to think this might be an usb trouble: in fact the modem has an usb
connection. I sometimes encountered problems with usb: i own some
peripherals with usb connection that i don't use very often and when i try
to insert them windows sometimes doesn't recognise them and often i cannot
disconnect them at the first try clicking on tray icon.
i have read this is a common problem worldwide (both shutting down and usb
conn.) but the only solution proposed is to update win. But I HAVE ALL
POSSIBLE UPDATE THAT EXIST!!!
Moreover this shouldn't be an hardware problem because it's very new and if
it were defective it wouldn't work at all.
i appreciate youe help.
please continue to...
bye

i understand you very well... :(
as soon as i have a solution i'll post it (if exists...)
bye

I'm out of ideas. My broadband is via cable modem to an ethernet output
to a router ... no USB involved at all. This reinforces my hunch to
stay away from USB-based services.

Hi Francesco,

You might have been hacked. I would strongly recommend ZoneAlarm Pro (if you want to try it before you buy it, their is a free
version). Both versions can be downloaded at;

These days, with all the spying, advertising and malicious sites out there you need to have a firewall!!

Thank you but i think a firewall would create me other kind of problems...
In fact use to exchange information online with my friends and collugues
(for work and not) and a firewall may create troubles.
If i try to send a via via the messenger (ms or msn) and there's ms firewall
on it blocks it!!!
I have thought to change my adsl usb modem with a new ethernet one, but
pheraphs i'll try you solution: it's more expansive!
PS: i've always been with microsoft but if there's an usb problem i will
shot bill! :)
It's not pssible that with sp1 and all win ypd installed i met usb problems!
c'est la vie...
thank you, bye bye!

Get some focus.

With no firewall, especially on broadband, you will eventually (if not
already) get hacked, hit with the blaster worm, and who knows what else.

Install and learn to configure the firewall to work.

Your modem is not the problem. Simplify. Consider buying a speciality
router/firewall hub that connects to your usb modem. Use the built-in
Ethernet LAN on the PC, or buy a NIC card for it (they are very
inexpensive). Connect it per the instructions.

If you wish to blame Bill .. well, ok .. but won't have anything to do
with reality.

well i was joking obviously!!! :)
thanks for the suggestion, i'll try it...
i'll tell you the response.

i have tried with zone alarm pro firewall...but the problem i still here!!!
:((((((
i am desperate!!!
i have to brutely switch off my pc everyday due to this problem!!!
at this point i am more than before sure that is an usb-windows trouble.
i'll try to change my adsl usb modem with an ethernet one.
bye, bye

Hi Francesco,

I do a lot of instant messaging. Because I know people who use ICQ, Yahoo!, MSN and AOL, I use Trillian as my Instant Messenger.
I have ZoneAlarm configured to allow Trillian to receive and send files.

It takes some reading to work out how to set up your firewall, but it is truly needed in this day and age. The first program
that I install on a new computer is ZoneAlarm then Norton Anti-virus. Once that is done, then . . . and only then do I connect
my broadband connection and update my Norton Anti-virus.

Ciao . . .

I have successfully installed and configured firewall and antivirus
software, but i'm still having the problem...
i have tried to uncheck all the non-ms starting software from msconfig but
this still remains...
how can it be?
thank you

Probably because these are not the root-cause of your problem. You need
firewall (hopefully hardware not software) and anti-virus software, but
installing them aren't the root cause. Find the root- cause.
