boxes appear instead of text

I have some text in sans serif and when I try to change the font to arial it
turns into boxes. It won't change into any other font either. What can I do
short of retyping the document?
 
Microsoft Sans Serif is a display font, not used for printing and not a
Unicode font. Try pasting the text into Notepad, then back into Word.
