I won't mind to view the contents of the bootsect.bak file not so much for
the purpose of editing but as a part of my campaign to educate myself on all
aspects of imaging, booting, backup and recovery. Is there any way to do it?

just open with notepad...
make sure *not* to opt for "always open with..."
