In earlier versions of Windows you could record a log of your bootup to
diagnose where or what was slowing things down. Does XP still have the
ability to log it?
My problem seems to be prefetch.
Yes I've emptied it.
Yes I've run Bootvis.
I'm still getting 97 seconds of prefetch holdups.
I tried the reg hack to "enableprefetcher" from 3 to 2 with not much dif.
I'm open to ideas.
I have in my possession (not mine) two exactly identical Toshiba Tecra S1
laptops & one takes 22 seconds & the other over two minutes to bootup.
Once it gets going it is OK.
TIA.........

I think that you will find that prefetch is NOT the cause of your hang ups.
Those programs will start anyway, as they are now a normal part of your
operating system. It just that without the prefetch the startup may, in
fact, take longer.

The prefetch is there because the system knows that they are used at every
bootup. Removing the prefetch files does not stop the necessary associated
files from being loaded.

The prefetch folder purges itself of any files that have not been accessed
for a period of three days. It is self cleaning of the old crud. Delete all
of the files and they will be re-established.

My personal experience has been that prefetch decreases, and does not
increase the startup time.

Yep, if I disable it it speeds it up. I'll leave it like that for now. I
reckon now the final startup of programs might be slightly slower but at
least it doesn't seem to be sitting there doing nothing.
Actually I noticed that the IDE had reverted back to PIO so I deleted
relevant bits in the registry & now the HD is running at DMA Mode5 so that
might fix it a little as well.
Thanks all.
