Bootlog full on "did not load", bootup time excessively long

I'm running XP Pro SP2 on an AMD 64 bit Athlon FX-51, 1gb memory. The machine
has been working well for a year, only the usual little glitches. Now,
however, booting takes several minutes after Windows starts loading. I pulled
a bootlog to find out what was happening. The log is fifty pages long,
single-spaced when written, about 250k. By far, most of the entries start
with "did not load" . A few files load, mostly system32 files, then several
files don't load. Then a few do load. Each time, more and more don't load
before a few do. Toward the end, a don't load sequence will be five or more
pages long. Finally the computer starts, and usually runs ok. But not always
ok.

Anyone have any information or suggestions?
