Booting Windows XP Sans logon

D

Don Schmidt

I'd like my Windows XP Professional to boot without the requirement of
logging on. Presently a widow is displayed asking for my logon and password.
I do not have a password and my name is in the logon box. To continue to
logon I must do an ENTER. I'd like it to boot on without the ENTER
requirement.

Auto Logon to Windows XP
Published: March 18, 2002

Submitted by Doug Knox, Microsoft MVP, Tewksbury, Massachusetts

You can configure Windows XP to automate the logon process if your computer
is not part of a domain.

1.
Click Start, click Run, and type control userpasswords2.

2.
Clear the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer
check box.

3.
Click Apply.

4.
Enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with,
and then click OK.

5.
Click OK again and you're all done.

This feature allows other users to start your computer and use the account
that you establish to automatically log on. Enabling auto logon makes your
computer more convenient to use, but can pose a security risk.

Start | Run, type "control userpasswords2" Select the account you want to
logon to automatically. Then uncheck the box "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer."

Or do the same thing with TweakUI.

Ken, Gene,

Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks greatly.

I had this before things were going badly with my Windows XP Pro which was
installed by upgrading Windows 98SE. So I formatted the hard drive (from
512 to 4096) and did a clean install but in the process lost the auto logon.
I like the auto logon for as I walk by the computer in the morning I turn it
on, dial up the thermostat for the fireplace, head for the coffee pot to
brew the morning starting fluid and in the meantime listen for any alarms
from Lotus Organizer and let MailWasher gather the incoming mail.

Thanks again for making my life easier.

Mr Blake- sir,

Can you tell me, offhand, whether TweakUI is still available? I've seen
references to this before but had the impression that Microsoft had stopped
making it available. If you don't know of a specific source, offhand, I'll
research it myself but thought that you could save me a lot of frustration if
you happened to know.
Thanks,
David

Just "Ken" is fine. No "Mr." or "sir" required.

Sure.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (if you have

or

(if you don't have SP1 or SP2).

Thank you very much. Maybe it was the Win98SE version that I had heard was
not available. My previous computer employed that older OS. I still have
that machine and may try to get it back into better condition. I've got some
old software that doesn't work all that well under the XP on my new machine;
and some of it can't be updated. So I may look for that older version of
TweakUI as well. Thanks again.
