The problem I have is if my machine with Windows XP hangs or reboots, I get a
strange text at reboot, right from just after the post screen. I then cannot
boot into windows, but the error report is undecipherable. It had been hinted
that it was a VIA pci bus problem, I have downloaded and installed the latest
driver, the machine seemed fine last night but I shut down and then this
morning just on normal boot I have the character problem again and cannot
boot windows at all. I have formatted and re-installed XP this worked fine
for about 2 days and the error came back. I am running Anti Virus software
that is up-to-date but that has not found any viruses. Please can someone
shed some light on this - I am losing the will to live.

Thanks

Boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 shortly after the POST, then
run msconfig.exe. Now disable each and every task under the Startup
tab and reboot the machine normally. The problem will most likely
disappear. Using msconfig, gradually re-activate the startup tasks
until you find the culprit. It is likely that this mental effort will cure
your suicidal tendencies.

Hi Pegasus

Thanks for the reply - if I could get into safe mode this would help. I
cannot even load into safe mode. As soon as I get the "hyroglyphs" I am stuck
it will not boot any further at all.

I am either going to lose my will or their will be an extra peice of space
junk in orbit.

You might have something as simple as an incompatibility
between your display adapter and your monitor. I suggest
you try booting the machine with a different monitor. You
could also try a different display adapter.

Thanks Pegasus

But went back to the beginning of prob solving again, and it now transpires
that one of the RAM modules is corrupt. The error messages I was getting was
that it was a DLL problem, I was not getting any POST error beeps at all, and
that is why I originally missed the RAM problem. I am going to replace the
RAM if it fails after that then I am going to launch it.

Thanks for the suggestions.
