Boot Problems

When I try to boot my Windows Xp Pro machine it either takes an insane amount
of time (more than 20-30 minutes) or just doesnt boot at all. I have all of
the latest updates and I dont have the machine overclocked so its not
overheating either. I think its a problem with the file system but it never
seems to get chkdisk running when I use it and then reboot to fix the errors.
I would rather not format and do a clean install at least not yet. What
could be causing this?

Machine Specs:
Abit NF7-S2G
AMD Athalon XP 2800+
1 gig DDR333
Geforce 5200fx
Netgear Gigabit Ethernet Card
Ultra ATA133 expansion card
2 Western Digital 20 gig drives
1 Maxtor 60 gig
1 Maxtor 250 gig
1 Maxtor 300 gig

Alex,

Can you get to 'Check Disk' from here?

* click the 'My Computer' icon on your Desktop
* right-click on 'C' drive & click 'Properties'
* click 'Tools' tab
* under 'Error-checking' heading click 'Check Now'

Also, should we assume you have no viruses & zero spyware in your Add/Remove
Programs & MSCONFIG's Startup programs?

There is 0 spyware and no trojans or viruses. I know this because its
scanned every day. I can get to check disk but more often than not it wants
to reboot and run it to fix the errors but it never makes it to the actual
tests before it freezes up. I havent rebooted my computer since the original
post and it still hasnt booted.

One potential troublemaker might be a bad or failing cd-rom or dvd-rom drive.. I
just recently repaired one that had such a failing drive, it would take upwards
of 30 seconds to 2 minutes each time something caused it to check any of the
drives. Disconnected it and the system ran much much faster.

Alex,

How about any errors in the Event Viewer when it does boot?

Alex,

Try booting without the printer and any USB devices plugged in, including
your modem.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\D.
A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.

And if I look far rnough back I have the same group of errors all mentioning
what I think is my D partition except it calls it hard disk 4.

Norton will always ask if I have problems with partition 1 and if I want to
scan sector by sector to try to find a bootable partition I would assume
these are connected and that maybe rebuilding he master boot record would
help?

Okay the boot errors that were consistently showing up on every boot appear
to be fixed for now. I completely forgot about the event viewer so thanks
for the reminder it saved me a lot of time
