"Ultra DMA S.M.A.R.T. capable but disabled" is a message
I receive while my computer is booting up. Can anyone
tell me what that's all about?

You have to set it up in your BIOS, means you drive has
it. It tests you disk and will give you a warning if your
drive is out of it's perimeters and is subject to fail,
maybe.

S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. This is a technology that is found on most newer hard drives, which monitors the integrity of the drive for problems. It can alert you if the drive may be failing. It's bwst to keep this turned on. This is enabled from within the system BIOS settings. Consult your documentation on how to access the BIOS settings. You will usually see a message when the system first boots about which key to press to enter "setup".

S.M.A.R.T. technology checks the health of hard drives during POST. If
there is a problem discovered, both POST and Windows will warn you
about impending drive failure. A nice warning that usually gives you a slice
of time to move important data off of the troubled drive before it is
replaced.

Most of the drives and system boards that are currently on the market are
S.M.A.R.T capable. The default setting on most system boards is disabled.
If you'd like to take advantage of this feature, use your BIOS setup screens
to change the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring setting.

Hi!Steve!
"Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (or S.M.A.R.T.) is a
technology that enables a PC to in some cases predict the future failure
of storage devices (like hard disk drives).

This SMART technology is present in your drive, but by default is set to
disabled on your drive. For making use of the S.M.A.R.T. feature you
would require a software (or BIOS) that enables and monitors the
S.M.A.R.T status of your hard drive, and an operating system that
supports the S.M.A.R.T feature i.e. Windows 95 or higher.

Thus the message

"S.M.A.R.T. Capable but Disabled"

means just that - the drive supports the feature, but it isn't enabled /
supported by the BIOS or other software."
