Boot issue fixed by defragmentation?

I have this Windows 2000 SP4 system which intermittently boots. Quite
often if it does not boot normally, I set it to boot in debugging mode,
or bootlog mode, and that remedies it most times. However on a few
rare instances I have had to select "Original Configuration".

I have also tried "SFC /scannow", but I'm not sure that helped much.

What does seem to help is a defrag (I'm currently using ES Diskeeper).

What can I do to help this machine boot normally without frequent
defrags?

Do a disk check including scanning for bad blocks and download a
diagnostic utility for the hard drive from its manufacturer and run it, too.

Passed both with flying colors

It's back to where it was. The CHKDSK & Mfr's (Western Digital) check
disk scan did not fix the problem. If I reinstall W2K Pro as an
"upgrade" (in effect, chuck all the Windows Update SP & fixes) that
seems to "fix" it temporarily also. But with all the Windows Updates
only a minimum of a weekly defrag (and sometimes a boot-time defrag)
seems to alleviate the problem.
