I am running windows xp home edition SP 3. I'd like to know where the
boot.ini file resides. I know it is there because when I run msconfig I can
read it, but it does not show me which folder it is in. I have seached for
hidden and system files the entire system partition, but no result. Could
sombody please advise me where to look for it. Thanks.

Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
Click on the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings box make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is
selected.
Next, remove the check mark from the box next to "Hide protected operating
system files".
Note: If you want, you can uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".
Click OK.

You should now be able to locate C:\Boot.ini in Windows Explorer or My Computer.

Note: You can open Boot.ini by doing the following.
Right click My Computer and select Properties from the menu.
Click on the Advance tab.
On the Advanced page, click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery
section.
On the Startup and Recovery dialog, click on the Edit button.
This should open your Boot.ini file in Notepad.

Just out of curiosity, why are you trying to locate this file? Keep in mind that
if you make a mistake editing this file you might not be able to start your
computer.

Good luck
