Boot.ini

When booting I get a prompt to select the operating system from two choices.
Both are the same... Windows XP Home. I can edit Boot.ini in
c:\windows\pss where it does show Windows XP twice. I delete one of them
but that does not fix the problem.

I go to MSCONFIG, Boot.Ini, the two items are still there. I change the
timeout to 3 seconds which helps the problem but I would still like to get
rid of that second instance of the boot option... How?

You're editing the wrong file.

The file in C:\windows\pss is probably boot.ini.backup. That is a backup of
your boot.ini file that should be in C: I.e. C:\boot.ini

I am guessing that you aren't showing file extensions.

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | UNCheck: Hide extensions for known file types |
Click OK

To edit the correct boot.ini file...
Start | Run | Type: sysdm.cpl | Click OK |
Advanced tab | Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery |
Click the Edit button
