Boot From External Drive

I have my c: drive mirrored onto my J: drive (using mirroring software from a
vendor). J: is an external USB drive. When I attempt to boot from it, an
error message flashes on the screen prior to the Windows XP splash screen and
it automatically restarts so I cannot read the error message. Two questions.
1) Does XP support booting from an external disk?
2) Is there some way to capture the error message so I can read it?
